Brian Cade

Brian is a private practitioner and registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. He is founding member of the Family Institute, Cardiff, the first agency in the United Kingdom devoted to the practice and teaching of, and research into family therapy. He is coordinator of the Graduate Diploma and Master¡¯s Programme in Family Therapy, New South Wales Institute of Psychiatry, Australia. He co-authored A Brief Guide to Brief Therapy with Bill O¡¯Hanlon in 1993 and has written more than 70 professional papers and sits on various editorial and advisory boards of several family therapy publications. Brian is an Advisor and Consultant for the Academy of Solution Focused Training and is a trainer for the Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Brief Therapy programme.

Dr. Therese Steiner

Dr. Steiner has worked in surgery and pediatrics and specializes in children¡¯s psychiatry and psychotherapy for more than 25 years. She serves as a consultant to several hospitals and is currently in private practice and works with children and families. She trained in hypnosis at the Milton Erickson Institute, Phoenix, Arizona, USA and at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Dr. Steiner was a close personal friend to Insoo and Steve and co-authored Children¡¯s Solution Work in 2003 with Insoo Kim Berg. She teaches solution focused brief therapy in the US, Europe and Asia. She is a trainer for the Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Brief Therapy and the Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Education programmes

Dr. Mark McKergow

Mark is an international consultant, speaker and author as well as a publisher. He is a global pioneer applying Solutions Focus ideas to organizational and personal change. His book, ¡°The Solutions Focus: The Simple Way to Positive Change,¡± co-authored with Paul Jackson in 2002 was declared one of the year¡¯s top 30 business books in the USA. He started his career in the electricity industry as a nuclear physicist. He has trained at the Brief Family Therapy Centre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. He writes on systemic thinking and NLP and has a PhD in physics and an MBA. He is one of the UK¡¯s leading exponents of Accelerated Learning methods. Mark was a key figure in starting the SOL (Solutions in Organizations linkup) conference in 2002 and is still closely involved with the organization. With Jenny Clarke, he founded SolutionsBooks in 2005. Their latest book is Solutions Focus Working published in 2007. Mark is an Advisor and Consultant for the Academy of Solution Focused Training and is a trainer for the Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Coaching programme.

Jenny Clarke

After a career in the energy industry, Jenny has spent the last twelve years as an independent consultant working as a solutions focused facilitator and trainer, helping people who want to change what they do or how they do it. She works with large organizations who are adapting to change, and as a personal coach to managers and directors. Her strengths are in communication, presentation, consultation and negotiation. Her style is facilitative and enthusiastic. Jenny has traveled the world hosting workshops for managers, consultants, and coaches and is a regular presenter at the International Alliance for Learning¡¯s annual conferences. A founding member of the SOL International Steering Group, Jenny was a key member of the organizing committee for the SOL International Conferences (see www.solworld.org).

She is a trainer for the Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Coaching programme.

Dr. Ronald E. Warner

Ron is the director and founder of the Certificate Program in Solution-Focused Counseling in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. He holds adjunct faculty appointments in the Counseling Psychology Program at the OISE/University of Toronto, and Department of Family Medicine, Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He is the Examiner for the Solution-Focused professional designations offered by the Canadian Council of Professional Certification. Ron has worked in clinical practice for 30 years as a counseling psychologist at Ryerson University in Toronto and was awarded a Professor Emeritus in 2001. He serves as a Consultant and trainer in our certification programmes.

Peter Szabo

Peter is Founder and Managing Partner of Solutionsurfers, the largest coaching school in Switzerland. He also teaches coaching at several European universities. He coaches individuals and corporate clients on management and life issues. Peter is a brilliant and imaginative trainer, and is a highly regarded member of the ICF (International Coach Federation) coach certification team. He is co-authored Brief Coaching for Lasting Solutions, with Insoo Kim Berg, perhaps the most comprehensive book on solution focused coaching and considered by some to be one of the best books on coaching today.

Dr. Linda Metcalf

Linda has a Master¡¯s degree in Education and a Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a former teacher and school counselor. She is Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Therapy at Texas Women¡¯s University and Associate Professor of the College of Education, School Counselling Program Director at Texas Wesleyan University. She is in private practice and works with families, couples and individuals, children and adolescents, with a focus on school based problems. Linda has written numerous articles and is a much sought after presenter. She has written several books, including Counseling Toward Solutions, Parenting Toward Solutions, Solution Focused Group Therapy, Teaching Toward Solutions, The Miracle Question: Answer It And Change Your Life!, A School Mental Health Program, How to Say It On College Applications, and A Practical Approach to Learning Family Therapy.

Linda is a trainer for the Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Education programme.

Dr. Alasdair MacDonald

Dr. Alasdair has been a Consultant Psychiatrist for the British Mental Health Services for the past 25 years. He has training in individual and group psychodynamic therapy and is currently registered as family therapist and supervisor. Dr. Alasdair has been a brief therapist for 25 years and has been using solution-focused methods since 1988. He has worked as a Medical Director and in higher education. He is involved in the running and evaluation of a child protection initiative which uses solution-focused methods. He is one of the leading solution focused therapy specialists in Europe and is the Research Coordinator and former President and Secretary of the European Brief Therapy Association. He is currently a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice. He has published in the psychiatric and psychotherapeutic literature. Dr. Alasdair¡¯s new book, Solution Focused Therapy, Theory, Research & Practice, was just released in March 2007. It contains an overview of current research in the area and account of the use of solution-focused approaches in various relevant therapeutic situations.

Harry Korman
Psychiatrist, Trainer

Harry works in private practice in Malmo with families, children, adults and couples. He supervises and teaches solution focused therapy in a number of areas within the mental health field and parallel fields. He worked in child and adult psychiatry for 15 years before entering into private practice in 1996. Harry is a physician, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. He and his partner, Jocelyne worked with Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the ¡°heroin program¡± in Malmo, in which they were doing family therapy with heroin addicts. He is co-author of More Than Miracles: The State of the Art of Solution-focused Brief Therapy with the late Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg and colleagues Yvonne Dolan, Terry Tripper and Eric McCollum. Harry started the mailinglist SFT-L in the fall of 1995 and is still the list-owner. Yvonne Dolan

Yvonne has been a psychotherapist for 30 years and is co-founder and past-president of the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Association (SFBTA). She conducts training throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. Her work is an integration of solution-focused therapy and Ericksonian hypnotherapy and reflects a life long interest in the linguistics of hope and its practical applications to clinical and everyday life situations. She is co-author with the late Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg and colleagues Harry Korman, Terry Trepper and Eric McCollum of More Than Miracles: The State of the Art of Solution-focused Brief Therapy. She has authored numerous articles and books including Resolving Sexual Abuse: Solution-focused therapy and Ericksonian Hypnosis for Survivors, A Path with a Heart: Ericksonian Utilization with Resistant and Chronic Clients, One Small Step: Moving Beyond Trauma and Therapy to a Life of Joy, and co-authored Tales of Solutions: A Collection of Hope Inspiring Stories with Insoo Kim Berg, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: It¡¯s Effective Use in Agency Settings with Teri Pichot. Yvonne studied with Steve and Insoo for over 20 years and regularly conducted solution focused training at the Brief Family Therapy Center. She is a resource speaker for our certification programmes and a keynote speaker for our conference in 2008.

 

Lee Shilts
School Psychologist, Consultant, Trainer

Lee is a professor at Nova Southeastern University¡¯s Marriage and Family Therapy Program in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He is co-author of the WOWW Approach Manual with Insoo Kim Berg and has written several articles and book chapters on solution focused brief therapy. He has worked in school settings for the past 25 years as a school psychologist and consultant. He continues to explore the applications of the WOWW in school settings as well as its research findings. Lee is in private practice and works with couples and families with school based issues. He is a clinical supervisor for the marriage and family therapy masters and doctorate program at Nova Southeastern University. He serves as a consultant and provides supervision and training for staff therapists at a children¡¯s home, a psychiatric hospital and residential treatment program. Lee is a resource speaker for our school based programmes and a keynote speaker for our conference in 2008.

Insoo Kim Berg
July 25, 1934 ¨C January 10, 2007

The international community is mourning the loss of Insoo Kim Berg who died unexpectedly on 10 January 2007. Insoo and Steve deShazer were pioneers and innovators in the field of family therapy, education and in organizations. Insoo and Steve co-developed the solution focused brief therapy model at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Their influence has been enormous and spans across the globe from the USA, North American, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia Pacific Rim. Insoo is the author of numerous books, including Family Based Services, Solutions Step by Step, and Building Solutions in Child Protective Services. She co-authored Working with the Problem Drinker with S. D. Miller, Interviewing for Solutions, with Peter De Jong, Children¡¯s Solutions Work, with Therese Steiner and Brief Coaching for Lasting Solutions, with Peter Szabo. Insoo continued to be a consultant and supporter of the Academy of Solution Focused Training until her death.
